On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his term.

A Historic Figure

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
