The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.
