India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Pollution Following Festival of Lights
On Tuesday morning inhabitants of the world's most polluted city were faced with breathing dangerously toxic air that registered in the "critical" level.
Extremely High Air Quality Readings
Various sections of the city showed an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which translates to 10x the safe limit established by the WHO.
Certain monitoring stations, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable levels.
Firecracker Ban and Recent Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, the government had maintained a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the dangerous pollution that blankets the city as winter sets in.
However recently, the recently formed city government appealed to the judicial authority to propose a relaxation of the restrictions.
They proposed allowing "green crackers" – previously questioned by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a compromise between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Numerous recording stations throughout the capital registered air quality peaking around the night hours to the most severe measurements seen during celebrations in at least three years.
International Consequences
The proliferation of fireworks during the festival also triggered a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on pollutants coming from India following the festivities.
Long-Standing Environmental Problem
The dangerously high concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a serious problem for over a decade and a half, with the condition showing no improvement.

This crisis in Delhi is caused by a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, building projects, waste incineration and pollutants from agricultural fires in neighbouring regions of Punjab and Haryana.
Within these states, farmers regularly set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as cooler air arrives.

The economic and health impact on the roughly thirty-three million residents living in the capital region is significant, according to various studies.
This pollution results in increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be causing approximately 10k early fatalities annually in the capital.
