Crew Member Reveals Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.

She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.

She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the mission, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The team of pioneers also comprised leaders in various fields.
